Campaign EZLN: The Fire and the Word took place February 11, 2008 at San Diego State University. The Colectivo Zapatista Tzajalek 32 presented the event. This event was the first of the tour though the United States by Gloria Muñoz Ramírez. Approximately 70 people attended the event, which was composed of a photography exhibition and a presentation of the book The Fire and the Word by Gloria Muñoz Ramírez.
Gloria started her presentation with a summary about the history of the Zapatista movement, from 1983 to the present. Afterwards, she spoke about the current situation in Chiapas and the militarization of the Zapatista communities. The government has sent more soldiers to these areas where they have burned houses and cornfields, and have kidnapped many compañer@s.
The audience was very attentive to Gloria’s discussion and made many questions about bilingual education in the Zapatista communities. They also asked about the versions the government has given in response to the Zapatista movement. Others wanted to know what they could do to help stop the militarization of Chiapas.
After the presentation, La Otra San Diego proposed a meeting to talk about the repression in Chiapas and come up with ideas to help end the militarization. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 19 at 6:30pm at Chicana Perk (129th 25th St., San Diego, CA 92102).
From a tiny corner of the universe, Colectivo Zapatista Tzajalek 32 would like to thank from the bottom of our rebel hearts, Gloria, Alejandro, all the compañer@s that have made the tour of The Fire and the Word possible, and all those who are fighting for a world where many worlds fit.
