Former UCSD professor Lew Perry spoke to the Humanist Fellowship of San Diego November 16 on the conflicts between religion, science and democracy. He said that conflicts are inevitable because when religion makes statements about the physical world -- like the Bible's claim that the earth is fixed in space -- scientists can and must challenge the religious understanding of physical reality.

Doug Manchester is one of the leading funders ($125,000) of Proposition 8, a California ballot initiative that discriminates against LGBT couples. While Hyatt may officially disavow Manchester's contributions to Proposition 8 as a personal choice, the fact remains that their multi-million dollar LGBT marketing efforts must be seen as little more than sheer hypocrisy when the revenue this marketing attracts is then funneled into efforts that bite the hand which feeds them. In such a situation, we always have the ability to choose not to feed them any longer.

[I]t will be interesting to see how antiwar activists react to this. Are they antiwar or just anti-Republican?

The passage of Proposition 8 proves that many American voters are committed to a basically theocratic view of government in which THEIR moral values and commitments should rule over others. It also means the Queer community needs to do some soul-searching over why people of color and others we considered natural allies voted for 8 in greater percentages than whites did, and whether "marriage" as a term carries too much religious baggage ever to win majority support for its legal extension to same-sex couples.

The Mount Hope Church is a deplorable, anti-queer mega-church in Lansing, Michigan.
The church works to institutionalize transphobia and homophobia through several repulsive projects including organized "ex-gay" conferences and so-called "hell houses", which depict queers, trannies and womyn who seek abortions as the horrors. Mt. Hope is complicit in the repression of queers in Michigan and beyond.
Bash Back! ain't down with that. And so on Sunday November 9th, about thirty radical queers from Lansing, Chicago, Memphis and Milwaukee disrupted the church's most well-attended sermon.

Woman in San Diego chains herself to foreclosed home. I am from LA and this is something revolutionaries in the SD could support! Direct Action will stop the foreclosures and evictions if we are willing to fight the powers that be. Call June Reyno and let her know you support the cause. 858 361-2399. If you want help in organizing against your foreclosure or eviction contact Labors Militant Voice at laborsmilitantvoice@yahoo.com. The middle-class are victims too. They thought they were playing by the rules. Only our nation's notions of work hard, support your family, build equity in your job and retire in dignity, have long since been usurped by the greed of a corporate owned economy. Average Americans have awoke this day, to find their twin towers of economic promise and security in flames. Their homes, their families, their very future, held hostage by thugs and crooks who stroll boardrooms, bank offices and investment firms. While most families go quietly in the night, without a whimper, internalizing their fall from economic grace, alone, isolated, helpless; June and Fred Reyno remain defiant.
