Free Skool Open House
Campaign EZLN: The Fire and the Word took place February 11, 2008 at San Diego State University. The Colectivo Zapatista Tzajalek 32 presented the event. This event was the first of the tour though the United States by Gloria Muñoz Ramírez. Approximately 70 people attended the event, which was composed of a photography exhibition and a presentation of the book The Fire and the Word by Gloria Muñoz Ramírez.
The City Heights Free Skool put on Viva la Lucha on Friday, January 25. It was a night of music, dance, food and film. The evening started out with showings and discussions of the Fourth World War, a documentary about global anti-capitalist movements, and A World No Wall Can Stop, a documentary about recent struggles in the San Diego/borderlands region. After the movies, a vegan meal was available for purchase that was cooked by two members of the Free Skool Collective (Thanks! So tasty!). When Critical Mass (100+ people) arrived at the house on their bicycles, the music began. We were treated to radical hip-hop by Nikki and Mongo, some indie rock by K.N.I.V.E.S. and DJs till late into the night. Special thanks go out to all the performers who donated their time and to everyone who attended and helped to create a space where people could have fun and raise some consciousness at the same time. Que viva la lucha!
